Over 8,000 criminals arrested in Karachi: Police chief informs SC.

KARACHI: Supreme Court of Pakistan resumed the hearing of Karachi law-and-order suo moto implementation case today (Wednesday) where officials of different institutions, including police and Rangers, submited their reports, SAMAA reported.
A five-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, took up the case at the apex cout’s Karachi Registry. The bench also comprises Justice Jawad S. Khawaja, Justice Mian Saqib, Justice Amir Hani and Justice Aijaz Afzal.
More than 300 miscellaneous pleas have been filed in the apex court pertaining to Karachi law-and-order case.
At the onset of the hearing, Karachi police chief Shahid Hayat submitted a report about police crackdown in the city. According to the report, the city police have arrested some 8942 criminals since 5 September 2013, registering 1,386 cases.
The police chief submitted that 2293 illegal arms and 220 kg explosives were recovered during raids.
Chief Secretary Sindh turned up before the bench and submited a report. Officials said the provincial government has suggested the Chief Justice to constitute five special courts in Sindh.
Officials of the Rangers, the Anti-Narcotic Force (ANF), the Pakistan Coast Guard (PCG), the Customs and other institutions submitted their reports pertaining to their performance in the light of Supreme Court orders.
