Rawalpindi: Chaudhry Taufiq Asif Wednesday won the election of District Bar Association beating his rival Malik Waheed Anjum for the seat of bar president.
Chaudhry Taufiq Asif secured 530 votes while his rival Malik Waheed Anjum got 511 votes.
The seat of vice president was won by Ahsan Mehmood Satti who bagged 849 votes against Muhammad Arif Shah who secured 397 votes. While Raja Asif Mehmood won the seat of general secretary, who got 526 votes against Sardar Bilal Qayum who bagged 300 votes and the third candidate Shahid Mehmood Langriyal secured only 431 votes. Advocate Zahida Ayaz won the seat of joint secretary by bagging 671 votes against her opponent Zafar Alam who got 587 votes.
Out of 1,674 votes only 1,276 votes were polled. Polling started at 8:00 a.m. and came to an end at 4:00 p.m. Chairman Election Board Barrister Sultan Mansoor announced the final results.
After winning the election new DBA president, Chaudhary Taufiq Asif told ‘The News’ that he would continue the struggle for reinstatement of all deposed judges including Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry. “Lawyers would come out on streets with new determination and they would start long march for a free judiciary as per schedule.”
The winning candidate for the seat of general secretary Raja Asif Mehmood told ‘The News’ that he would follow the footsteps of his leaders in future to continue the struggle for reinstatement of all deposed judges.
“Rawalpindi Bar had big contribution in struggle for free judiciary and we would continue the struggle with full zeal and fervour,” he added.
A heavy contingent of police officials including lady police was present in Rawalpindi District Courts to avoid any untoward incident.
